Step 1: Aim High.
Step 2: Break It Down.
Step 3: Put In The Work.
As easy as that.
The key is to dream big. Stop limiting yourself to what you believe is attainable. I say this while keeping in mind that as much as I wanted to be an astrophysicist when I was younger, wishing I maybe went down that path a little earlier on and as tempting as it still sounds now, I know that my idea of happiness isn’t years of school studying physics and math might not seem realistic at this point on my journey to success. There are different ideas of success, knowing the risk and reward. You want to release a book, start a successful company, create an app, run a marathon, make a difference in the world, make money travelling.. it is actually all attainable. It all comes down to the amount of work you’re willing to put in.Where does that stem from? Mindset.
BREAK IT DOWN
This is the key to turning that dream list into reality. How? By turning your dreams into goals. Break your list down into smaller goals.. and then again, into even smaller goals. Until your dream is broken down into a to-do list. The smaller the task, the more attainable it will be. It’s always better to start small. As Tim Ferriss suggests, make a list of 3 goals to achieve before 11am the night before. Remember that a small successful step into the right direction is better than not even moving towards the end goal. Make sure those goals you are setting are attainable.
There’s the example of a man who was looking to get back into shape.. he only started with 2 min of the recumbent bike/day. You might think that 2 min a day is way too small for a goal, but the thing is, this man did it every day, and slowly adding a minute at a time and eventually got to a point where he was doing 2 hours on this bike. If you really think about it, I think we’ve all been guilty of making a goal so unattainable that we simply never started or gave up so quick that the amount of time passed anyway, where we could of simply started small and actually got to our end result.
So you have your dreams, you’ve turned them into goals.. what’s the magic ingredient to make it happen?
PUT IN THE WORK
Most habits don’t change overnight.
When it comes to habits, willpower is like a muscle. If you’ve trained it well enough to tell yourself that things are unattainable, you’re most likely to tell yourself that every time a big idea comes by and shut it down real quick. If you’ve created the habit of coming home after work and aiming for the couch and the tv remote, well chances are you’ll be doing just that even after telling yourself the night before that tomorrow is the big day.
“Just like going to the gym and building up strength and endurance, you can build up your discipline and willpower over a long period of time by setting and accomplishing a series of tasks on a consistent basis”. -Mark Manson, “All About Habits”
You gotta just show up every single day. Fall in love with the process, knowing that the goal is worth all the hard work. Nothing comes easy, if it did everyone would be at the end goal. It takes drive, determination and dedication to get to your dream. You either will sit back, take the easy route, believe in those excuses your mind makes or you will show up, for yourself. Every single day. With every step you will be able to look back at how far you’ve come and see your dream turn into reality.
Don’t get down if you have an off day. Don’t give up if your schedule gets messed up.. show up the next day, and the next. Just make sure you take a step. That’s all it takes.
